What does it mean??? wonders the Word Spy

The Word Spy is travelling in Paris at the moment and spotted this in a tapestry at the Cluny museum of the Middle Ages - hmm - what is this strange writing, I wonder? It is over 500 years old. If you have any ideas, be sure to let the Word Spy know!

Hello, it's me, Betty Autumn from Vermont.
I think that tapestry shows two monks reading a book about Marco Polo's travels along the silk road and him going all the way to China and back. The numbers are Italian and show how many robbers he fought off.
