My question is simple from Hector

Dear Word Spy,

My question is simple not like some other people's. I want to know where the word detective comes from.

From Hector

Dear Hector,

I like your style, Hector! I will try to make my answer simple too. The word detective comes from a Latin word (the language the ancient Romans used to speak), "detectus", which means, "uncovered". So a detective is someone who has uncovered a crime that is hidden from the rest of us.

As a spy, sometimes I am a bit of a detective myself...

yours in hiding, The Word Spy
